EDMONDS CAMPAIGN CONTINUES

High in Legislative Scorecards

Freeport -- Maine Senate President Beth Edmonds (D-Freeport) recently earned perfect scores on two legislative scorecards. The Maine People's Alliance rated Edmonds 100% considering her votes on bills on issues including the minimum wage increase to $7.00/hr and improvements to Dirigo Health. She also earned a perfect ranking on her third consecutive scorecard from the Maine League of Conservation voters. Among the votes rated were those on environmental issues against pollution from Mercury and Pesticides.

Senator Edmonds recently reaffirmed her enthusiasm as she runs for her fourth term in Senate District 10. Edmonds said: "I am proud to have earned the recognition from these respected organizations. In the next Senate session we have much to accomplish. The three most important issues we must continue working on are good paying jobs through creative economic development, opportunity through education and quality affordable health care." She concluded: "I plan to continue to help with our effort in moving Maine forward".

Edmonds is completing a consecutive third term as State Senator. Currently there is no opposing candidate running for Senate in District 10, which is comprised of Brunswick Freeport, Harpswell and Pownal. The deadline for filing is July 24. Election day will be November 7.

She has been President of the Maine Senate for nearly two years. "As President, I have been able to forge a consensus around the many issues that benefit Maine people." she said. "I am committed putting the needs of working Mainers, their families and elders, and small businesses first." She added: "I have enjoyed advocating on behalf local constituents in the past and I will continue to represent the needs of the people in District 10 with dedication."

Senator Edmonds won her last three contests with increasingly wide margins. In 2004 she garnered nearly 60% of the votes in District 10. She was also the first state senate candidate to register as a Clean Election Act candidate in Maine in January 2000. She has again filed to forgo private campaign donations in favor of receiving public campaign funds in this campaign. Edmonds said, "As always, I am committed to public financing of campaigns because I believe that every person, regardless of whether or not they can contribute money to a campaign, should have the same degree of influence in this State. I am doing what I can to make sure that every person I represent has an equal voice in our government."

Edmonds is also Director of the Freeport Community Library, and lives in Freeport with her husband Dan Nickerson.
